What is a free-running door closer?

A free-running door closer is a door closer that only activates during a fire alarm or smoke detection. During normal use, the door feels as light as a door without a closer: you can open and close the door without noticeable resistance.

Only when the connected smoke detector or fire alarm system sends a signal does the closer switch to normal closing force, causing the door to close automatically and controlled.
